SASSA Extends Gold Card Swap Deadline Until April 30 – What You Need to Know

SASSA recipients who could not swap their old gold cards for the new Postbank black cards can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has announced that the deadline for the swap has been extended once again.

During a recent media briefing on the outcomes of a cabinet meeting, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni disclosed that the deadline for finalizing the swap has been shifted to April 30, 2025.

The extension gives beneficiaries additional time to switch, giving SASSA and the Department of Social Development time to complete the migration of persons who have not yet switched.

The Timeline of Extensions

Initially, February 28, 2025, was proposed as the swap deadline for the gold cards but was later deferred to March 20, 2025. Now, through the most recent extension, recipients have until the end of April 2025 to effect the swap.

The extension of the deadline comes amid serious fears that those who failed to swap their gold cards would be in trouble accessing their social grant payments.

Most beneficiaries, especially the elderly, had complained of long waiting hours at branches, spending hours in line to get the new black card.

Ntshavheni said that the extension was needed so that the transition could be smoother and ensure that every beneficiary was able to migrate without losing access to the funds.

Postbank’s Progress

The minister also reported encouraging news about Postbank, saying the bank had met eight out of nine of the conditions prescribed by the South African Reserve Bank to pay out social grants. Only the physical exchange of the cards remains and should be fulfilled within the new timeframe.
